Discussion:
Automating JES2 Spool management

I am frequently facing JES2 resource shortage, and to resolve the
situation I am resoting to $pJ1-9999 and $pS1-9999. This resolves my
problem but at a cost I guess. Is there some tool that would
automatically purge old jobs based on a parameter?

How can I increase the jes2 spool space?

When I shutdown MVS i am receiving a message that some data is queued
to class 'L', what does this mean? Is the resource shortage beacuse
of this class being not available?

Thanks
Kanth

The cost is that you lose old output.
There are numerous tools to do the job. Look up automatic commands in
Jes2 that start at predefined times.

How can I increase the jes2 spool space?
easy! create a new volume(s) that starts with a generic character(s)
(say SPOOLx).
Then on this(these) volume(s), create a large dataset(s)
say "sys1.syspool" but remember that these datasets must not be
catalogued.
Then update your jesparm parameters like spool volume
with the first 5 chars of your spool volume(s),
then update the spool dataset parameter. When you bring up jes2,
reply "format" to initialize the spool dataset(s)

It means you defined class L as an output queue and output is waiting
to be processed. it is not available because there is no device
assigned/active to read from it. It is not directly the cause but if
you have too many unprocessed output, it would fill up the spool.

At this level of JES2, the dataset must be named SYS1.HASPACE. You are
correct in that it must not be cataloged, and the volume should be named
SPOOLx (if you don't, you'll have to rename the existing volume). Note that
the format start will wipe out everything in your existing spool, as well.

The L class output being produced is the SYSLOG being spooled off as
the system shuts down. It shouldn't cause any problem at all.
