Discussion:
Turnkey MVS under VM, and 3270 w/3174.

Hello,

First of all let me state that I'm new to hercules, VM & MVS etc (more
used to VMS & UNIX). I have both VM/370 and MVS 3.8J turnkey systems
running, and would now like to get MVS running under VM. I noticed the
hercules config that ships with VM turnkey includes DASD lines for
MVS, and so installed MVS turnkey in the specified location - although
appeared to be missing the js* DASD files in herc config. I then
created a user called MVS in the directory but wasn't sure if the
parameters I used were correct. I based the MVS user on the example in
Greg Hartwig's New User Guide, and rather than configure a minidisk
just put in 'DEDICATE' lines, each with the address of the MVS DASDs
(as per herc conf) twice. I ran DIRECT VM50 DIRECT, logged on as MVS,
got errors due to some missing devices, and then tried to ipl from 148
and got "DISABLED WAIT PSW".

Does anyone have example DIRECT entries for MVS? And is there anything
else I must do?

Also am I right in thinking it's not possible to run Linux under
VM/370 (given it's not S/390 onwards)?

And lastly, I'd love to be able to hook up a real terminal, and seen
reference to people using a 3270 type device combined with a 3174 to
connect to hercules. Could anyone provide more info, or even a source
of such kit in the UK?

Regards,

Andrew

PS. I can't remember the last time I've had so much fun learning about
an OS. Suffice to say I should have been studying for a Linux exam the
last week and have spent every evening fiddling with hercules!

That’s correct. VM/370 emulates classic 370 machines, Linux needs an ESA or S/390. Note that most user mode stuff will migrate forwards with modest changes. Its stuff that does physical i/o that breaks...

Where is that picture of Jay Moseley's Apple II to 3174 to Hercules

The basic idea is to get a 3174 with a network interface (most likely Token
Ring unless you get either rich or lucky) and Config Support C version 6.
That setup will do TN3270. You then TN3270 into Hercules, just as you would
from Linux or Windows.

I can't help with UK sources, though.

Many thanks for the advice. I appreciate it's hard to say for certain
from a picture, but does this 3174-81R appear to have network
interface? Or is the 4th coax connection a "mainframe" interface of
some sort (SNA?) ? And if the supplied disk is not what I need could
it be difficult to obtain software? And how do you configure these things?

On my monitor I can't make out too much detail, but the fourth
co-ax has a CRT and other icon (328x printer?); I doubt that it
would work with anything else, but I have no experience with
token ring devices. To the left is something that looks like an
RS-nnn connector. My guess is that this is strictly for a modem,
and would run as an SNA terminal (or possible older BSC?).

From earlier messages in Hercules groups, you need something
that supports either Ethernet or Token Ring. I've configured
31nn controllers since they first came out, and even with
matching documentation, it's a PITA. You "boot" (IML) the
controller with the gen disk, and get menu screens allowing you
to set the options. Most of them are coded numbers, requiring a
manual for interpretation. Also you'll need to swap disks
frequently (which is why I prefer 2-drive models). Error
messages are confusing to non-existent; usually you just get a
display code in the lights. Sometimes everything appears to work
correctly, but the generated disk won't work.

Thanks, lucky I didn't bid on it!

So what struck me as a much simpler solution would be a 3270 PCI card
'operating in reverse' if this is possible. I'm guessing however that
having Googled all manner of related terms, and ready plenty of
Hercules pages etc, and not seen mention... means this is not
possible, or the code is yet to be written.

Thanks,

Andrew

PS. Still no luck with MVS under VM on herc :o(

By the time PCI standards came out, 3270 cards fell out of favor
having been replaced by emulators over LANs. You might try for an PC
/ AT / ISA card, if you have a computer old enough to still have such
a slot.

Right, but this would still depend on there being some software to
interface the card with Hercules or convert connections in via the
card from a terminal to TN3270 and out over IP?

Hello!
Andy, Mike is right. I've been trying without much success to get a straight
answer from IBM concerning their 3270 cards for the PCI bus, and their
opinions aren't what I would call professional.

Now as for the PC /AT / ISA bus ones, I've got scads of them here. How many
do you want, and where do you want them sent? Contact me off list with the
details please. Also a few **snicker** MCA bus ones.
