Discussion:
How do I tell that I am working with a MC3277 or TN3270? How do I install TSO?

Hello group,

Thanks to all of you that gave me all the help that I needed to install the Turnkey MVS3.8J. I appreciated all the help.

Continuing on my MVS3.8j installation journey, I am at this time unable to start "TSO/ISPF" type facility to be able to do customization of my MVS system. What I am trying to do is install TSO/RPF, IMON370, and complete all the customization as recommended by Volker Bandke in his "Customizing the MVS 3.8J Tur(n)key System" and Jay Moseley in his "Starting and Stopping VTAM/TSO" and other online documents. My biggest

How does one customize the logon screen? Yes, the MVS Tur(n)key
system has plenty of documentation that I have tried to follow the instructions but I have failed to get any required command to execute successfully. For example, after starting MVS 3.8j, I tried to start customization first from the Hercules Windows GUI command line prompt and second from the "startmvs" command line prompt and typing s sysmods,member=mvs0010. Both times I receive the following error messages for different commands:
S TSO

TSO
HHCPN139E Command "TSO" not found; enter '?' for list.

IBMUSER
HHCPN139E Command "IBMUSER" not found; enter '?' for list.

Can someone clue me in on what else I need to do to resolve this problem? How can I bring up the MVS 3.8 System Console for Windows 7? At this point of my MVS installation, how can I submit jobs(JCL) to MVS?

Your help is highly appreciated.

Thanks

There seems to be a big gap in your problem description/question "My biggest
" leaves a blank line followed by "How does one...."

The HHC* messages indicate that you are issuing commands in the Hercules
console window.
I'd suggest that you have skipped a few steps in the instructions and have
not started the necessary TN3270 sessions; one for the MVS console and at
least another for the user logon to TSO.

I also wonder if you have even IPL'd MVS.

I suggest that you go back to the documentation and restart where it says to
start the TN3270 clients.

Hello au1john,

Thanks for your post in response to my request for MVS installation assistance. Yes, I did leave a blank line after "My biggest..."/ My trend of thought at the time was to say that because of the issues that I am having that I was not sure that Iactually installed the turn-key MVS3.8j system correctly. By that I mean I could indeed have missed some steps during installation or start-up procedure. And I am still not sure of it.

So, it there a sure way to determine if MVS 3.8J Tur(n)key System was completely installed - no missing required install component and such.

Also, I was not aware that one need to IPL MVS 3.8J Tur(n)key System after installation. I thought all I need to do is install and fire up this baby and I am ready to do some customization and startup the MVS system.

Ok, now that I know I'll go back and see if I can fix what my problem is.

But three question though...How do I start "the necessary TN3270 sessions; one for the MVS console and at least another for the user logon to TSO." Also, How do I do an IPL? I believe I saw where Volker Bandke or Jay Moseley(Manual build of the system?) said something about that but I can't seem to locate it now...do you know?

No offence, but you don't know how to IPL, but you're all ready for
some "customization" ? ;)

You need to run a tn3270 emulator, (separate program) either from a
batch file or manually starting them up, using the CNSLPORT setting in
the config file to connect. I don't remember if the Turnkey comes
with a tn3270 client. I use Tom Brennan's Vista emulator, it's only
$30 and has some nice features.

Download at least one of either "Sep75" or "Jun70" (S/370) principles
of operatoin, and read how the IPL works

You might also download the ESA/390, Zarch versions, though they
won't be applicable when running Turnkey MVS (as it runs in ARCHMODE
S/370). You can run ARCHMODE ESA/390, Z/arch (ESAME) on the "bare
metal" though (no O.S. just using raw assembler).

Hello Mike,

Thanks for the links...it was right there under my nose...man, ignorance is one big disease.

Do you know if we have any sort of messages and codes for the turn-key?

Again my thanks

Hello Mike, I appreciate the good-natured ribbing, at least I hope it is. But if I may say this, if I ask what is dumb questions to you, that is because I am dumb and I want to learn...I am a newbie with this software and gradually realizing there's more to it than just installing Hercules emulator and the Turn-key and much much more...even "baby big-iron" is very much like "grown-up big-iron" - it is still nothing to sneeze at in terms of putting it all together in one's mind. But I am getting there...

Anytime and everytime, I appreciate your productive recommendation and pointers to resolve my turn-key problem.
